Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Cloud Forest – Paucartambo – Pilcopata

The Manu Amazon tour starts with a hotel pickup in Cusco early in the morning, between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., in a comfortable private bus. Along the way, we will stop to admire the Funerary Towers or Chullpas of Ninamarca, located at 3,750 meters above sea level, and learn a bit about their history.

Next, we will make a short stop in Paucartambo, a charming town with a colonial bridge and a rich local tradition. Then we continue to the high area of the town, in the Acjanaco sector, at 4,000 meters above sea level, which marks the official entrance to Manu National Park.

From here, we will descend into the cloud forest, a mysterious and vibrant ecosystem where you can see orchids, heliconias, and ancient ferns. During a short walk, you may witness the amazing mating ritual of the Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruvianus), Peru’s national bird, and possibly see other birds like Trogons (Trogon sp.), Quetzals (Pharomachrus sp.), and if you are lucky, the elusive Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus).

At the end of the day, we reach the picturesque town of Pilcopata, at 550 meters above sea level, where our cozy traditional lodge awaits. The lodge is away from the town and offers comfortable rooms with private bathrooms, perfect for resting and enjoying the jungle surroundings.

Day 2: Pilcopata – Atalaya – Machuwasi – Rainforest Lodge

After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we continue our journey by bus to Atalaya, a 45-minute ride reaching 490 meters above sea level. Upon arrival in Atalaya, we will board a boat for about 30 minutes to reach Rainforest Lodge, our overnight accommodation set in a typical jungle environment with private bathrooms and showers for your comfort.

During the boat ride, you will have the chance to see wildlife in their natural habitat, enjoying the peace and beauty of the Amazon rainforest. After a tasty lunch, in the afternoon we will head to Cocha Machuwasi, where we will take a ride on a local catamaran to observe a wide variety of birds, including the Hoatzin (Ophisthocomus hoazin), as well as monkeys, reptiles, small caimans, and insects. With some luck, we may also spot capybaras (Hydrochaerus hydrochaeris).

Later in the evening, those interested can join an optional Night Trek, an exciting experience to explore the jungle after dark and discover its hidden wildlife. Afterward, we return to Rainforest Lodge, where you can relax and enjoy private bathrooms and showers in a cozy and comfortable setting.

Day 3: Rainforest Lodge – Cloud Forest – Cusco

On the final day of our 3-day Manu tour, we will start early in the morning with a 45-minute boat ride to the parrot clay lick, a wall of mineral-rich clay. Here, we can witness the amazing gathering of 3 to 4 species of green parrots, arriving in large numbers to feed on the natural salts and minerals in the clay.

After this unique experience, we will enjoy a delicious breakfast before continuing our journey. We return by boat to Atalaya and then continue by bus, passing through Pilcopata (550 meters above sea level), Patria, and Chontachaca, once again crossing the beautiful and mysterious cloud forest on our way back to the city of Cusco.

Along the route, we will have the chance to admire the cloud forest and its rich jungle scenery one last time. We expect to arrive in Cusco between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., concluding this unforgettable Manu adventure.
