The first day of this adventure to Manu National Park from Cusco begins early at 5:30 a.m., when our bilingual guide will pick you up from your hotel to start the journey to one of the most astonishing and well-protected natural parks in South America. During this trip, you will discover spectacular landscapes, Andean culture, and the incredible biodiversity that characterizes this region of Peru.

Stop at Ninamarca and visit to Paucartambo

After approximately an hour and a half of travel from Cusco, we will arrive at Ninamarca, an ancient archaeological site where pre-Inca funerary towers stand on top of a mountain. Here, together with your guide, you will learn about the history and meaning of these ancestral structures while enjoying an impressive view of the Andean landscape.

Continuing the journey for about 30 minutes more, we will reach the traditional town of Paucartambo, famous for its cobblestone streets and colonial architecture. Here we will have time to enjoy a typical breakfast and take a short walk through its historic center, allowing you to experience the local atmosphere and learn about some of the customs of this charming town.

Entrance to Manu National Park and Ajanaco viewpoint

After leaving Paucartambo, we will begin the ascent along a scenic road until reaching Ajanaco, located at 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) above sea level. This point marks the entrance to Manu National Park, recognized as one of the most biodiverse natural areas on the planet and declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Here we will take a short walk of approximately 7 minutes to a natural viewpoint. From this point you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the mountains of Tres Cruces, the vast Andean cloud forest, and the beginning of the Manu Amazon rainforest—an ideal setting for photographs and for appreciating how the landscape changes as we approach the Amazon.

Cloud forest exploration and wildlife observation

From Ajanaco we will begin the descent into the Manu cloud forest, a unique ecosystem where constant mist creates a mysterious environment full of life. During our walk through this natural setting we will look for various bird species such as the blue-banded toucanet, the golden-headed quetzal, and the crested quetzal.

With some luck you may also spot the Andean bear, one of the rarest and most emblematic species of this region. This environment hosts a great diversity of flora and fauna that makes the cloud forest one of the most fascinating parts of the journey.

By mid-morning we will reach the area of San Pedro, where we will enjoy an outdoor lunch in a special location surrounded by the natural sounds of the rainforest.

Andean cock-of-the-rock observation and arrival at the lodge
