Your adventure will begin with a reception at Iquitos airport or from your hotel, depending on your arrival time. From there, you will start a journey that will take you to discover the most authentic colors, flavors, and customs of the Amazon.
At 8:00 a.m. you will visit the famous Belén Market, a lively place where you will discover jungle fruits and products such as açaí, aguaje, chonta, and guaraná. In the spice area, you will find local ingredients like turmeric, annatto, and ginger, while Pasaje Paquito concentrates herbalists with medicinal plants such as cat’s claw, sacha garlic, and ayahuasca.
You will also explore the fishing area, where Amazon river species are displayed. The experience is completed with a glimpse of the local cuisine: juanes with tacacho, cecina, grilled caiman, and the peculiar suris. To close this visit, you will enjoy a canoe ride on the Itaya River and discover the floating neighborhood of Belén, a unique community that floats on the waters.
The journey will continue to the Bellavista Nanay dock. Along the way, you will receive a brief introduction to the history of Iquitos, a city that in the 19th century grew from a small village into a cosmopolitan port during the rubber boom.
At the dock, you will take a short tour to learn more about Amazonian cuisine before embarking on the journey along the world’s mightiest river.
On board safe and traditional boats, you will begin navigation along the Amazon River, considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. From the deck, you will enjoy the vastness of the river, the lush vegetation, and riverside villages with their colorful houses.
The first stop will be at the confluence of the Nanay and Amazon rivers, a natural phenomenon where waters of different colors meet without mixing.
Next, you will visit the Yahuas community, descendants of an indigenous group known since Francisco de Orellana’s expedition in 1541. There you will learn about their customs, observe their palm-fiber clothing, and have the opportunity to try the blowpipe, an ancestral hunting tool.
Your tour will continue at Fundo Pedrito, where you will see the Amazonian paiche (arapaima gigas), one of the largest freshwater fish in the world. You will also see white caimans, piranhas, and the spectacular Victoria Regia, the largest aquatic plant on the planet.
In the afternoon, you will arrive at Yanayacu River Lodge, where you will receive a warm welcome. The lodge staff will explain the sustainability rules that help preserve the environment, and at 1:30 p.m. you will enjoy lunch before settling into your private cabin.
You will then have unique experiences: you can swim in the Amazon River, exfoliate your skin with natural mud, and watch an unforgettable sunset. After dinner, a guide will take you on a night walk to observe insects, tarantulas, snakes, and other creatures that come to life at night.
At the end of the day, you will rest in your cabin, surrounded by the tranquility of the jungle.
At 4:30 a.m., you will start a morning tour to watch the Amazon sunrise in all its splendor. This is the perfect moment to receive positive energy and see how numerous bird species feed along the riverbanks, in plantations, or on the small fish abundant nearby. Your guide will explain each of the species you encounter during this journey.
Afterward, the boat will take you to the other side of the river, where you will have the chance to see one of the most unique species of the Amazon and one of the main characters in local legends: the pink dolphin, known as “bufeo colorado.”
After this experience, you will return to the lodge for breakfast before continuing with the next activities.
After breakfast, you will visit an artisanal sugar mill, a place where some of the tools used by the jungle inhabitants in the past are still preserved. Here, you will have the opportunity to participate in extracting sugarcane juice and taste this typical drink called “leva.” You will also be able to try some aphrodisiac and medicinal drinks such as RC, 21 raíces, SVSS, and Flamingo, made from local jungle plants.
The day continues with an artisanal fishing tour, where you will learn traditional techniques used by locals for generations. With patience and the help of local rods, you will try to catch piranhas and other river species. If you wish, the lodge chef can prepare your catch so you can taste the authentic flavor of the Amazon in your own lunch.
After this activity, you will return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest before the next visit.
In the afternoon, you will visit one of the most requested places by visitors: Monkey Island. In this sanctuary, you will observe and interact with over 15 rescued monkey species living freely. Here, you will experience direct contact with Amazonian wildlife, watching up close how they interact with each other and with visitors in a natural and safe environment.
At the end of the visit, you will return to the lodge for dinner. Later, at the time indicated by the guide, you will participate in a night excursion to a nearby lake or stream to search for small caimans. This journey will allow you to discover how the jungle changes at night and feel the magic of the Amazon in its most mysterious aspect.
At 8:00 a.m., you will enjoy a typical breakfast at the lodge. Then you will prepare to start one of the most fascinating experiences of the journey: a botanical walk in the heart of the Amazon jungle.
During this exploration, you will venture into the jungle to learn about medicinal and ornamental plants. The guide will explain the secrets of each species, showing how Amazonian locals use fruits and barks as alternative medicine. You will also have the opportunity to try some of them and experience firsthand the natural richness that the Amazon offers.
Along the way, you will encounter the sturdy huambe lianas, where you can swing Tarzan-style, just like the riverside locals do in their daily activities.
Additionally, during this walk, you will have the chance to observe monkeys, sloths, and birds in their natural habitat, an authentic experience that connects you directly with the region’s wildlife.
After this adventure, you will return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, you will visit the San Rafael Butterfly House, a space dedicated to the conservation and reproduction of these species. Here you will observe more than 23 types of diurnal butterflies and learn about their metamorphosis process, from egg to adult specimen.
The variety of colors and shapes of these butterflies captivates every visitor, making this place one of the favorites in the Amazon jungle tour.
At the end of the visit, you will return to the lodge to enjoy dinner and rest surrounded by the tranquility of the Amazon.
After breakfast at the lodge, you will prepare to embark on a final excursion in the Amazon jungle, venturing into a very special area cared for by the local inhabitants.
During this day, you will explore one of the largest floodplains of the Yanayacu, a protected natural area renowned for its richness in wild flora. Along the route, you will learn about different species of timber trees and observe bromeliads, epiphytic plants that grow high in the trees and are an essential part of this ecosystem.
However, what will amaze you most is the majesty of the giant flora, especially the impressive lupuna trees (Ceiba pentandra), which can reach over 60 meters in height and live more than 200 years. Walking under these colossal species will be an experience that allows you to feel the vastness of the Amazon jungle and understand the importance of its conservation.
This excursion will not only provide direct contact with nature and the chance to breathe fresh air, but also a profound lesson: you will learn to value and respect the jungle to preserve its richness for future generations.
After the walk, you will return to the lodge for lunch.
Finally, at the indicated time, you will get ready to board the boat back to the city of Iquitos. The return journey will allow you to mentally relive each experience during the tour, while the Amazonian landscape accompanies you in the final moments of this adventure. Arrival in Iquitos is scheduled between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m.
If your flight is scheduled for the same day, you will be transferred directly to the Iquitos airport. If your flight is the following day, you will first be taken to your hotel in Iquitos and later, the transfer to the airport will also be arranged.
